Barren Ridge Vineyards is a small vineyard and winery in the heart of Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Owners John and Shelby Higgs opened the vineyard in April of 2008, but the land has been in John’s family since 1934, when his father purchased what was then St. James Orchard. As John and his siblings grew up and went their separate ways, and as the Virginia apple industry declined, the orchard fell into neglect. The land became overgrown, and the old apple packing shed was almost falling down when John and Shelby decided to revive the property as a vineyard and winery.
Clearing the land, planting and tending the vines, and transforming the packing shed into a state-of-the-art winery has been a labor of love for the Higgs family. Part of their vision was to see other families celebrate the special occasions and milestones of their lives at Barren Ridge, and they created event spaces with warmth, elegance, rustic beauty, and Southern hospitality in mind, surrounded by a backdrop of spectacular views.
