Our Wines

Barren Ridge Vineyards has been making award winning wines since 2007. The vineyard is located near the site where Filippo Mazzei originally intended to plant vitis vinifera in the 18th century, before he and his good friend Thomas Jefferson decided to attempt planting in the Charlottesville area instead.

Previously cultivated as an apple orchard, the land that is now Barren Ridge Vineyards features low nutrient, mostly limestone, soil. The low vigor and excellent drainage create excellent growing conditions for several vinifera varietals. Although not benefiting from the sun and dry heat of California, Virginia wines, with their lower alcohol content and elegant flavor profiles, have often been compared to French wines, which Mr. Jefferson greatly admired and tried to replicate. Crafted in the traditional style of a Bordeaux blend, our Meritage wines have won a number of awards including Best in Show at the Virginia State Fair for the 2007 and 2008 vintages, and the 2009 and 2010 vintages have both won gold medals in the Virginia’s Governor’s Cup, a stringent statewide competition.

While generally holding true to a dry European winemaking style, Barren Ridge’s wine list offers something for every palate. Two of our most popular wines, Harmony and Red Barren, are off-dry blends. John and our winemaker are always experimenting too, and have collaborated to produce a port style, a sparkling Vidal Blanc, and an eiswine-style dessert wine.
